green flexibility and Stadtwerke Menden are jointly implementing a forward-looking energy project: a large-scale battery storage system with a capacity of 10 megawatts will be built in Menden.
Menden / Kempten, 01 July 2026
With the increasing feed-in of electricity from photovoltaic and wind power plants into the grid, the demand for flexible storage solutions is growing — systems capable of absorbing surplus electricity at scale and releasing it when required. The large-scale battery storage facility to be jointly operated by green flexibility and Stadtwerke Menden in Menden will serve exactly this purpose by reducing peak loads and strengthening the stability of the regional electricity grid. By selectively storing and feeding in renewable electricity, it will make a significant contribution to flexibility and security of supply in the power system.
The facility, with a capacity of 10 MW and 25 MWh, is scheduled to enter the construction phase in September 2026 and to commence operations in Q2 2027.
With the new battery storage system, an important contribution will be made in the Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia to regional supply security and the integration of renewable energy sources. The project underlines Stadtwerke Menden’s commitment to actively shaping the energy transition and regional energy supply, deploying innovative technologies, and ensuring that grid infrastructure remains future-proof and stable.
“The expansion of renewable energy is a key pillar of the energy transition. Thanks to the Menden battery storage system, renewable electricity can be used even more efficiently,” explains Matthias Lürbke, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Menden.
Collaboration for the energy transition
The cooperation between a regional energy utility and a specialised developer and operator of battery storage systems is still considered unusual in the industry — however, this is already the fourth cooperative project for green flexibility that is being realised in close collaboration with a municipal utility or regional energy provider.
“In close exchange with local municipal utilities, we pursue jointly developed and implemented projects. A successful and stable energy future can only be achieved when all stakeholders contribute their perspectives and expertise. The cooperation with Stadtwerke Menden is an excellent example of this,” says Christoph Lienert, Co-founder and Managing Director of green flexibility.
About green flexibility
As a leading expert in the energy transition, green flexibility combines in-depth expertise with cutting-edge battery storage technology to make the energy infrastructure of the future reliable, flexible, and sustainable. As an end-to-end partner for battery storage systems, green flexibility plans, constructs, and operates storage facilities at strategically important points within the power grid. In doing so, green flexibility manages all project phases — from identifying suitable sites to the operation and commercialization of the storage systems.
