VWEW-energie and green flexibility Launch Joint Battery Storage Project in Marktoberdorf

VWEW-energie and green flexibility have commissioned and officially opened a new utility-scale battery storage system in Marktoberdorf. With a power output of 10 MW and a storage capacity of 25 MWh, the system was developed and built at the VWEW-energie site in just seven months. The project is a joint venture between the regional energy provider and the developer and operator specialising in battery storage.
The partnership combines VWEW-energie’s strong regional presence and energy industry expertise with green flexibility’s technical and operational capabilities. Together, the partners have implemented a utility-scale battery storage system that supports grid stability by charging when electricity from wind and solar is abundant and discharging when demand increases. In this way, the battery storage system helps smooth price fluctuations and integrate renewable energy more effectively into the power system. The system operates in a grid-neutral manner, taking into account the requirements of the regional electricity grid.
“The expansion of renewable energy, which we have been successfully driving for many years, is a key pillar of the energy transition. The challenge now is to store electricity generated from wind and solar so that it can be used as flexibly as possible when it is needed,” explains Stefan Fritz, Managing Director of VWEW, putting the project and partnership into context.
Working Together for the Energy Transition
The joint project in Marktoberdorf demonstrates what can be achieved when a regional energy provider and a specialised battery storage partner combine their strengths to deliver a project together in a short period of time.
“In just seven months from signing the contract to commissioning — that is a record for the industry. This is possible when we bring together the perspectives of all stakeholders involved. Our partnership with VWEW-energie is an excellent example of this,” says Christoph Lienert, Co-Founder and Managing Director of green flexibility.
This also marks the concrete implementation of the REGIOlink concept: a regionally tailored, grid-neutral operating model that goes beyond simply responding to national price signals. The experience gained from projects like this also feeds into the FCA Blueprint — a practical framework to support distribution system operators in developing and implementing Flexible Connection Agreements.
Marktoberdorf shows that the energy transition needs not only new technologies, but above all strong partnerships.
